inside every turning leaf

When I was beginning to read I imagined
that bridges had something to do with birds
and with what seemed to be cages but I knew
that they were not cages it must have been autumn
with the dusty light flashing from the streetcar wires
and those orange places on fire in the pictures
and now indeed it is autumn the clear
days not far from the sea with a small wind nosing
over dry grass that yesterday was green
the empty corn standing trembling and a down
of ghost flowers veiling the ignored fields
and everywhere the colors I cannot take
my eyes from all of them red even the wide streams
red it is the season of migrants
flying at night feeling the turning earth
beneath them and I woke in the city hearing
the call notes of the plover then again and
again before I slept and here far downriver
flocking together echoing close to the shore
the longest bridges have opened their slender wings

sweeping summer out the door

Here we sit in the space between summer and fall, where one season breathes in and the other breathes out. Keats called it the "season of mist and mellow fruitfulness," when the peaches are plump and the plums turn sweet. We step with flip flopped feet, peeling toe polish, and fading tans on sidewalk that cools by evening, passed sheep grazing in pastures soon-to-be-gold as their coats thicken with wool to cover our toes with the first sign of frost. We watch trees become kaleidoscopes overnight, turning too many colors to name, and we gaze as the big dipper dips and bows in preparation for the return of Orion to the night's sky.

Endless Summer

Back from a week of sand and surf. It was, in a word, Heavenly.* As promised, I'm working on a slide show. Thanks to D for the new lenses. And thanks to all surfers who participated. Especially Cole. You're my fave. For like ever.

Oh, California
Thought I’d never reach the water
Had to cross the desert and the great divide
Drinking only golden promises
With white lines in my eyes

Oh, California

It’s the one big love that you cannot end
Oh, California
It’s not like before but we can still pretend

Oh, California

I can see you now from the top of that hill
Oh, California
Though many have gone I have the memories still
Oh, California
I can hear the sound of the mission bell
Oh, California
We’re one stone’s throw from heaven

*Holla to an injured wave rider. May your wounds heal soon. Thanks for teaching me in the wise ways of the Surfer Dude.

climbing colors

Many of the houses in my parent's neighborhood are covered in ivy. This time of year it turns brilliant shades of red and orange. There's a bright patch along the back fence in my parent's yard. It was begging for a portrait yesterday.

wish i was here

I know I promised pictures of Southern CA. I can't find my camera cord. I'm going to have to buy a card reader Monday. Speaking of photographs...

I logged onto flickr the other day and found out that one of my photos from our Nantucket vacation (four summers ago! Family, can you believe it?) has been nominated for a contest. I'm shocked. Truly. I don't consider myself a photographer at all, (especially with such a mediocre camera). Scrolling through my Nantucket album made me quite nostalgic, though.

I just so happened to check Urban Grace today. I've included some of her lovely photos, taken the same time of year (with a much better camera). All the photos below are from Urban Grace. Go to her blog to see more photos from her trip with her husband and to read what she has to say about Nantucket.

Check out that sun room.

I love the festoons and the nautical flags.

Roses on the rooftop?! This place is pure magic, people.

happy weekend

I've been on a bit of a blogging break this week. Feels good, actually, except that truthfully, I've started about seven different posts in my head. It's been quite the week, and I'm grateful it's the weekend. There is much to write, but I think I'll save it for in-person delivery. Those sweet people who I don't know who check this, thank you. I adore you for reading about my seemingly important life. This weekend is going to be fun -- the mountains, an evening here in the valley on the porch with twinkle lights, lunch with grandma and R&R, bike riding. It should be, as Em says, "Delightful." Love her.
